Wear Orange for Azaylia

We thought long and hard about how we could commemorate the month of April. It has been a year since Azaylia’s passing and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to help us mark this month in the most powerful and unified way.

We are so proud to announce our first community powered campaign, Wear Orange for Azaylia, to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer. For this campaign we provided our wonderful community with all the tools needed to plan & execute a non-uniform day at their local school. Over one hundred schools and day care centres signed up to participate within a week of launching the campaign, and Safiyya visited schools in her local area to meet children and discuss positivity and mutual support.

Any organisation can participate, to do so just click on this link or email info@azaylia.org for more information.

Alexander’s Story

Alexander, a 7 year old boy fighting a brain tumour, was granted £10,000 by The Azaylia Foundation towards his immunotherapy treatment in Germany in November 2021.

He has since had to undertake urgent inhibitor treatment at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London at a cost of £64,399.92 (not covered by the NHS), to stop the growth and spread of his tumour before he is able to receive treatment in Germany.

Ashley then ran a marathon on Christmas Day in order to raise awareness for children with cancer and – specifically – funds for Alexander, for which our incredible community stepped up to raise an additional £39,000. To contribute directly to Alexander’s fundraiser, please visit the Azaylia for Alexander Christmas Marathon GoFundMe campaign

Oli’s Story

The Azaylia Foundation is proud to announce that a donation of £10,000 has been made to support 15 year old Oli in his brave battle against an aggressive form of brain cancer. Oli was diagnosed in July 2021 after suffering from headaches and vision problems. He went from being a healthy, Chelsea loving school boy to undergoing ten hour surgery and a gruelling six week course of chemo and radiotherapy in the blink of an eye.

The funds from The Azaylia Foundation will help towards the cost of immunotherapy vaccines for brain tumours and brain cancer which are not covered by the NHS. They are designed to recognise specific proteins produced by cancer cells in the hope that the patient’s immune system will then recognise and attack those cells to prevent the cancer from growing back.

University of Birmingham

The Azaylia Foundation is pleased to announce a donation of £120k to the University of Birmingham, to fund the purchase of a Cell Sorter machine – a crucial piece of laboratory equipment. This machine uses a combination of 3 lasers and special fluorescent dyes to recognise different types of cells – such as immune cells and cancer cells from the blood and tumour samples that get donated to their laboratory for research and as part of clinical trials of new treatments.

The machine will allow more patient samples to be processed and enables doctors to provide detailed studies of how cancer cells respond to different treatments, as well as helping them in the design and production of exciting new potential immune therapies, such as CAR-T cells.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital

The Azaylia Foundation made its very first donation to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where Azaylia, and so many other children, are treated for all types of childhood cancer. The staff at the hospital go out of their way to treat, care and support not only the little warriors fighting this battle but also their families during the toughest days of their lives and we are proud to be working alongside them to fight against childhood cancer.

Our £20,000 donation will fund an innovative piece of equipment which enables augmented reality precision surgery and, in the future, has the potential to revolutionise surgical care for children with cancer. For more information please visit Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s website.

George’s Story

We donated £10,000 to support 12 year old gorgeous George in his plight to raise funds for specialist treatment in the United States following being diagnosed with a Glioblastoma brain tumour in April 2021. George and his family were battling this disease with the same positivity that drew so many to Azaylia’s journey and we hoped this donation would help towards their goal.

Unfortunately, on April 4 2022, weeks after returning from his treatment in the United States, George passed away. His parents Louise and Matt continue to raise awareness for childhood cancer and the systemic lack of funding for the biggest killer in children in the UK, with the same positivity that carried them in the fight to save George’s life.

Cycling Fundraiser – Lands End to John O’Groats

14 Days and 1000 Miles by Ashley, Matty and Tamika to raise awareness and funds for the newly created The Azaylia Foundation. All gear, equipment and vehicles for this challenge were either loaned or donated to the team. Our incredible community supported the team every step of the way, raising over £100,000 for the foundation, which adds to the foundation’s starting capital of over £1.5M. Our journey has just begun and together, we will be fearless in the fight against childhood cancer.

Over the next few months, we will hire a CEO who will help us turn the foundation into an organisation capable of fundraising, donating, and creating awareness for childhood cancer sustainably, for many years to come.
